Imagine waiting for the sun to rise before you could see for the first time that day. We would probably find it difficult today. At night they used candles (if they could afford candles) to light rooms at night. All you have to do is think back to how it must have been 200 years ago. In 1879, the American inventor Thomas Edison was able to produce a reliable electric light bulb in his laboratory.

We have come a long way since 1879 and so has the way we deal with electricity, how we have allowed it into our homes and into our everyday lives. Electricity has richly enhanced man’s life to the point that we can fly, we can ride on water and we can also enjoy the radio, TV and use laptops.

The downside to having electricity is that we take it for granted. We never really know what it is like to go without electricity unless we forget to put money into the meter, or we forget to pay our electricity bill. We find that this seems to put things a bit more into perspective for us but then there is also an upside which is that every year we are using electricity to do great things and come up with new inventions and this makes us very different from our ancestors.

The one thing we need to learn is that if we treat electricity with respect it can be our friend and will serve us loyally. The fact that electricity is used in hospitals, in the home and for transportation is a huge step forward. We need to be careful and conserve our energy because we are running low on coal, natural gas and oil. It took hundreds of years to produce them and if we want our generations to enjoy what we have enjoyed, then we have to be conservative. This can also help you save money so that means you can do more fun things with the money you save.

If you look around your home, you can take note on how to become more conservative. Just think of the money you will save!
